What the Excursion Involves
Excursions typically depart Maamigili around 09:00, right after breakfast. The boat heads out to the area of South Ari Marine Protected Area where whale sharks have most recently been active, and the crew and guide search from there — this is often the part of the trip that takes the longest, since finding a shark on a given morning isn't instant or guaranteed.
Once a shark is located, the guide explains how to enter the water and what to do, and guests snorkel alongside it for as long as the encounter naturally allows — whale sharks move continuously, so time in the water with any one animal is usually a matter of minutes at a time, sometimes with more than one approach if the shark stays in the area. The whole excursion, door to door from Maamigili, runs approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

If We Don't Find a Whale Shark
Whale sharks are wild animals, and a sighting is never guaranteed on any single excursion — this is true anywhere in the world, and South Ari Atoll is no exception. What makes a real difference is what happens next, and most operators don't say much about it.
If the search doesn't turn up a whale shark, guests are taken to a nearby reef for approximately 30 minutes of snorkeling instead, so the trip isn't a wasted morning either way. Vilu Residence may also offer a discounted second attempt on another day — we don't publish a fixed discount amount, since it depends on the situation, but it's worth asking us directly if this happens to you.
Shared Trips, Group Size & Private Trips
The standard whale shark excursion is a shared trip, not a private one, and needs a minimum of 2 participants to run at the standard rate. If you book for the same day as other guests, you may be combined onto the same boat.
If you're travelling alone and no one else is booked that day, additional charges may apply. A fully private trip can also be arranged on request — we don't publish a fixed private-trip price here since it depends on the specifics, so ask us directly if that's what you're after.
The number of crew and guides on board is adjusted to the number of guests participating — we don't run a fixed ratio, but scale it up when more guests join.
Who Can Join — Swimmers, Weak Swimmers & Children
Weak swimmers are welcome to join, but should tell our staff or the guide before departure about their swimming ability and whether they'll need assistance in the water. Every excursion boat carries life jackets, available free of charge whenever needed — but a life jacket doesn't automatically mean everyone is suited to entering the water that day. The guide's safety instructions and the actual sea conditions on the day still apply, and take priority.
Children may join with parental approval. Parents should tell our staff or the guide about the child's swimming ability before the excursion. Vilu Residence doesn't recommend in-water whale shark snorkeling for children who can't swim well — a child assessed as not suitable for the water is welcome to stay on the boat instead and watch from there, though normal excursion charges may still apply even if the child remains aboard. There's no single fixed minimum age; suitability comes down to swimming ability and the guide's judgement on the day, discussed with you beforehand.
Safety Briefing & Responsible Whale Shark Encounters
Before anyone enters the water, the guide gives a safety and interaction briefing covering how to behave around the shark. This isn't just excursion etiquette — the Maldives has a legal regulation protecting whale sharks (Regulation No. 2024/R-96), and following it is both the law and the reason encounters here stay good for the sharks and for future visitors.
What the regulation requires: stay at least 3 metres from a whale shark's body and 4 metres from its tail; never touch or hold onto the shark; approach and swim calmly from the side, never head-on or from behind; never chase or obstruct its path; and no flash photography. Guides brief every group on this before entry, and enforce it in the water.

Weather & Trip Changes
Vilu checks weather and sea conditions ahead of every excursion. If conditions aren't suitable, guests are told before departure, and the trip may be postponed to another day or cancelled — booking in advance doesn't by itself guarantee the excursion runs exactly as scheduled.

Is There a Best Season?
South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks can be encountered throughout the year. Research by the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme has found no strong seasonal pattern to individual sightings in the South Ari Marine Protected Area — unlike destinations where whale sharks pass through on a narrow migration window, the sharks here appear to use the area year-round, most of them immature males, in what researchers believe functions as a kind of nursery habitat.
That's a statement about presence, not a promise about any single trip. Year-round presence means there isn't a "wrong" month to try — it doesn't mean a guaranteed sighting on the day you go. Good weather and calm seas can mean clearer underwater visibility and a more comfortable snorkel, but we don't have evidence that better conditions actually raise the odds of finding a shark on a given morning, so we won't claim that they do.

What Should You Bring?
- Swimwear, worn under your clothes so you're ready to go
- Reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen — protects both you and the reef
- A hat and sunglasses for the boat ride out
- A change of clothes for afterward — towels are provided, but you'll be salty and possibly wet on the ride back
- Your own camera or GoPro, if you'd like photos of the encounter
